KIBCo Trainers and Counsellors to Guide Parents on Caring for Children During the Long School Holidays

Introduction

KIBCo Trainers and Counsellors to Guide Parents on Caring for Children During the Long School Holidays

As schools prepare to close for the upcoming long holidays, parents and guardians are encouraged to take an active role in supporting their children's emotional, psychological, social, and physical well-being.

The long school holidays provide children with an opportunity to rest, bond with family, explore their interests, and develop new skills. However, the extended break can also present challenges, including excessive screen time, disrupted routines, peer pressure, exposure to unsafe environments, and limited parental supervision.

To help families navigate this period, Kenya Institute of Business and Counselling Studies (KIBCo) invites parents and guardians to join its Trainers and Counsellors for practical guidance on keeping children safe, emotionally supported, and positively engaged throughout the holidays.

What Will Parents and Guardians Learn?

KIBCo's Trainers and Counsellors will share practical insights on:

  • Supporting children's mental and emotional well-being: Recognising emotional distress, managing anxiety, and creating a safe environment where children feel comfortable expressing themselves.
  • Keeping children safe: Understanding online safety, preventing abuse, identifying risky situations, and providing appropriate supervision.
  • Building positive parent-child relationships: Improving communication, listening without judgement, setting healthy boundaries, and strengthening family bonds.
  • Managing screen time and behaviour: Establishing reasonable limits on phone use, gaming, and social media while encouraging responsible digital habits.
  • Keeping children constructively engaged: Balancing rest with reading, household responsibilities, creative activities, sports, hobbies, and meaningful family time.
  • Preparing children for school reopening: Maintaining healthy routines and gradually helping children transition back to academic life.

Practical Guidance for Every Parent and Guardian

Every child experiences the holidays differently. While some children may enjoy the freedom from school routines, others may struggle with boredom, loneliness, emotional changes, or the loss of daily structure.

Parents are encouraged to create predictable routines, spend quality time with their children, ask open-ended questions about their experiences, and take their concerns seriously. Children also need age-appropriate independence, clear expectations, and adults they can approach when they feel unsafe or overwhelmed.

Most importantly, caring for children goes beyond providing food, clothing, and entertainment. It also means being emotionally available, modelling positive behaviour, and creating an environment where children feel loved, protected, and valued.
